Today is Immigrant Day and lobbying is taking place in Sacramento. Assembly Member Luis Alejo wants to amend AB 60 to include the language for a marked license to say ‘for driving purposes only’.
We are continuing to ask our members and supporters to call Luis Alejo’s office today. Please forward the following alert to your networks and if possible, track the number of calls we are making.
CALL ALEJO TODAY TO KEEP DRIVER’S LICENSES CLEAN & SAFE FOR ALL!
Assemblymember Alejo wants to amend AB 60 – the Safe and Responsible Driver Act – to include language for driver’s licenses to have a marking, which would indicate individual’s statuses. We need to pressure him to keep the bill clean and ensure that all drivers have access to licenses that do not discriminate!
CAN YOU CALL HIS OFFICE TODAY AND TELL HIM TO KEEP LICENSES UNMARKED?

“Hi, my name is _____________ and I am [a resident of your district] calling to ask the Assembly member to NOT amend AB 60 to include language for a marked license. A marked license would endanger people to discrimination and risk for detention and deportation. CA is long due for driver’s licenses for all, but we must do it in a fair and accessible way. Please keep AB 60 as it is currently drafted – licenses with no markings.”
As currently drafted, AB 60 would allow virtually all Californians to apply for a driver’s license using a federal individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), other residency or identification documents specifically listed in the bill, or other documentation deemed appropriate by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The current bill language does not include any type of distinguishable markings on the licenses.
We are extremely concerned about the author’s pending amendment because a marked license could lead to discriminatory actions and flag individuals’ statuses, possibly netting them into unjust detention and deportation.
