Monsignor Oscar A. Romero

With the Inauguration this weekend of the Monsignor Oscar A. Romero Plaza at MacArthur Park we remember his contributions as a priest of the people during the 1960s and 1970s and as an Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977 — who stood up for the human rights of the poor, protested military violence and repression against the Salvadoran people, and spoke out against U. S. military support for the government of El Salvador. He was shot dead while celebrating Mass by members of the Salvadoran death squads. The song, “El Padre Antonio Y El Monaguillo Andres” by Ruben Blades is dedicated to the memory of Archbishop Romero.
