Children and families refugees

The children and families who are coming here from Central America are coming as a result of long-standing structural and historical inequalities and violence. At the minimum, they deserve refugee status. Under current law, the Border Patrol is required to take immigrant minors not from Mexico and turn them over to the Office of Refugee Settlement. Usually, these children are released to a family member or put in foster care while they await for their day in immigration court. President Obama, however, has said that he wants to change this law and that he will ask Congress to give Homeland Security new authority to “fast track” the deportation of these young immigrants. So, in addition to organizing to Stop Deportations and to expand DACA, our efforts need to expand to ensure that the human rights of these children and their families are ensured and protected.
