Giving Thanks to our supporters!

UFCW Local 1428 extends a heartfelt thank you to our many supporters who turned out in solidarity with our El Super members – who struck the company over Unfair Labor Practices (ULPs) last Wednesday  protesting the Company’s failure to process grievances and bargain in good faith, including denying the Union key information. The one-day El Super ULP strike coincided with one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and was enthusiastically supported by UFCW members at all seven unionized stores.

As you know, El Super workers have been courageously fighting to win respect and a fair contract from their multibillion dollar, transnational employer for more than two years. El Super has dug in its heels and remains committed to delaying and denying justice to their largely immigrant workforce. In so doing, it threatens to undermine grocery industry labor standards that have taken decades to establish.

With your continued support, this will NOT happen on our watch. Our members are strong and united, and they continue to receive unprecedented support from the local and international labor communities. Last month, UFCW led an international coalition of labor groups who filed complaints with both the U.S. Office of Trade and Labor Agreements and the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, alleging El Super and its Mexico-based parent company is violating the North American Free Trade Agreement’s side deal on labor. The investigation is ongoing.

We urge all of you to continue to honor the El Super consumer boycott and the spread the word among your friends and family. We will continue to update you on the status of the El Super campaign, including future mobilizations in protest of this irresponsible, low-road operator in our communities.

Thank You,

Mark Ramos, President

El Super Candlelight Vigil on Wed. at 6 PM in Covina

Please join us for a candlelight vigil in support of El Super Workers

Wednesday November 25, 2015

6:00 PM

El Super  960 E. Arrow Hwy, Covina, CA

We have continued pressure on El Super with many actions, including delegations, the boycott, filing wage claims and have extended our fight in Mexico with the parent company Chedraui.  For more information www.boycottelsuper.org.  Although we have won in some areas, we still do not have a contract.

We would like to notify you that we have started talking to our members about a potential strike.  If we go out on strike it will be at our Union store in Covina (El Super 960 E. Arrow Hwy, Covina, CA).  There won’t be much notice as this must come as a surprise to the store.

Many of you have stood by the workers in the past.  Today, we ask your support as the workers take this courageous step.  If and when they go out on strike, I will send out an emergency text to you so that you can join the line for 1-2 hours. Please respond to this email with the best number to text you and let me know what time is more convenient for you to join the line.

Here are ways you can help.

  • Join the picket line. Bring people with you.  Bring your enthusiasm.
  • Make signs of support
  • Bring noise makers
  • Bring snacks for the picketers
  • If you play an instrument, know a musical group, danzantes, or entertainment.
  • Possible community candle light vigil, time to be determined.
  • students, community, children are welcomed to join.

Talking strike is very scary, but having friends like you keeps us strong.

Thank you!

Emergency El Super Delegation on Monday

We are happy to announce, we are returning to the negotiating table with El Super on Tuesday August 18th.  This would not have happened without your support.

Join us for an emergency delegation to El Super, to remind El Super that the community is behind the workers and would like this to be resolved.  We feel this will set the right tone as we enter negotiations the following day.  We will only do this at the Union store in Covina.  The delegation will be no longer than 30 minutes.

I know this is short notice, if you have 30 minutes in your schedule we would appreciate your support.  It will make a difference.  Please let me know if you can join us by responding to this email.  Also send it out to your list serve.

Thanks Sylvia Carranza
