Article on meatpacking industry and its needs for immigrant workers. The article focuses on workers in the Greeley area — an area where I grew up — and where I organized after graduating from the University of Colorado. I was part of the early efforts in organizing meatcutters, particularly Latino workers, into the UFCW. It is the same story with many corporate employers today. They know that they need the immigrant work force and cherish the low wages and the high profits – from using their labor. But, they want this labor without having to give them any rights – including legalization. They want to take us back to the days of temporary worker programs (such as the Bracero Program). Let us keep fighting for genuine legalization proposals to adjust the status for all undocumented immigrants where they can be treated as full human beings with full democratic rights, with no expansion of temporary guest worker (bracero) programs, and with labor law protections.
