Cannot afford to lose trust? As long as these ICE agents can hide under these masks, they can continue to hide behind those masks and carry out acts of violence and racial profiling – knowing they cannot be identified – and be held accountable. We now also know that some of these ICE agents are Proud Boys or members of the far right who have been hired – and there is no way to identify them and to expose them. Enforce the ICE Mask Ban!
LAPD will not enforce California’s ban on ICE agents wearing masks.
Police Chief Jim McDonnell says citing federal agents for mask violations could escalate already tense situations and pose safety risks for officers and agents. The law, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last fall, is now under judicial review as the Department of Justice challenges its constitutionality.
McDonnell also reiterated LAPD’s long-standing position on immigration enforcement, saying the department does not cooperate with ICE and cannot afford to lose trust within immigrant communities across Los Angeles.
