What is emerging as a big issue in the governor’s race is the right of immigrants to health care. Becerra took a stand last year against Newsom’s position of freezing Medi-Cal enrollment for undocumented immigrants – and has vowed to preserve and stabilize Medi-Cal coverage for roughly 1.4 million immigrants. Now his opponent Hilton is making this a primary issue of his campaign and “has promised to eliminate their coverage and has echoed national Republicans who have skewered California’s expansions to bolster their claims of fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program.”
