A Memory Today Of Pitzer students

A memory today of Pitzer students as part of one of my last classes where we visited Agbayani Village – a retirement center constructed in the early 1970’s for Filipino farm workers by the UFW in Delano (with volunteers such as Luis Juarez who was a student at the time and

pictured here alongside the students). Agbayani housed Filipino farm workers (known as Manongs) who worked in the fields as early as the 20s and 30s, and who because of anti-miscegenation laws and racial discrimination never married and did not return to their homeland. Many of them joined in the strikes with AWOC and the UFW in the 60’s and 70’s – and Agbayani became their home after they retired. Today, it is designated as a National Historic Monument.
