Resilience is the only word to describe the commitment of a core of community leaders meeting with renowned muralist Paul Botello to preserve the murals at Cesar Chavez Park in Pomona and to develop a long-term plan for the park’s development. A follow-up planning and work-day bar b’ que has been set for Saturday, June 7th at 10 am at the park.
Highly recommend the theatre production of Just Like Us (LatinoTheatreCo.org) held over for another week at the L A Theatre Center – based on a non-fiction book that follows four Latina high school seniors – and the problems faced by them as they navigate graduation, their dreams of going on to college, and the obstacles faced by two who face the obstacles of being undocumented (at a time before DACA and when anti- immigrant xenophobia is on the rise). The true story, based in Colorado, brings out some of the issues that our immigrant families are facing today with scapegoating, raids, and targeting taking place at an unprecedented level.

Music, Writing, and Organizing for Immigrant and Bracero Rights: The Activism of Rosa Martha Zarate
Rosa Martha Zarate, an organizer of immigrant workers and a musician who has given concerts in Central and South America (including Portugal and the United States) will present in Professor Jose Calderon’s Rural and Urban Social Movements class in Fletcher 104 at 3:20 pm on Wednesday, April 13. Rosa Martha will draw on her own life in making the connections between her use of popular education and the art of music to community-based organizing and cross-border social movements in Latin America and the barrios of the Southwest. She will also connect to her recent book Our Grandfathers Were Braceros” highlighting her support, in the last 20 years of the binational social movement of ex-Braceros. The purpose of her book, as she has shared, is the recovery of historical memory in accompaniment of former bracero grandparents and the relatives of those who have already disappeared in their fight for justice. Rosa Martha is the cofounder of Libreria del Pueblo, Inc., the cofounder of Calpulli, an international leader in fighting for the rights of bracero workers, and an organizer in advancing alternative economy projects in Indigenous and peasant communities in the US and Mexico. The presentation is open to those who are interested and made possible by support from Campus Life.

His presentation will include how he has used art as a means of raising consciousness about the contributions of our Mexican and Immigrant-origin communities and how art can be used to advance social movements and democratic spaces for change. Paul Botello was born and raised in East Los Angeles. He earned a BA and an MFA from Cal State University, Los Angeles. He teaches art in the LAUSD school system and has taught, in the past, at Pitzer College. In 1994 he traveled to Berlin, Germany where he collaborated on a giant mural titled “Global Chessboard.” Other recently completed murals include “Citizens of the World” at Esperanza School, and “In Unison” at the Maravilla Housing Facility. He also completed a large-scale mural on the Metro Gold Line construction fence that was located at First Street and Soto. Portions of the mural can now be found at the Pueblo del Sol Community Center in East Los Angeles. He has painted a number of murals in the Inland Empire region in collaboration with student and community participants including: five murals on the Pitzer campus, a mural at the Pomona Day Labor Center, one at Vina Danks school in Ontario, and five murals at Cesar Chavez Park in Pomona. Botello lives and works in East Los Angeles and exhibits his work locally, nationally, and internationally.
