Eduardo Galeano (1940–2015) was a Uruguayan journalist, writer, and political thinker whose work explored colonialism, imperialism, capitalism, exploitation, memory, and the history of Latin America. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Galeano became one of the most influential literary voices of the Latin American left. His best-known work, Open Veins of Latin America (1971), examines how European colonialism and later forms of economic domination extracted wealth and resources from Latin America. Combining history, journalism, political analysis, and literary storytelling, Galeano sought to recover the experiences of ordinary people whose voices were often excluded from official histories.

His trilogy Memory of Fire (1982–1986) further challenged conventional narratives of the Americas by bringing together indigenous histories, colonial violence, political struggles, and popular memory. Other important works include Days and Nights of Love and War (1978) and Soccer in Sun and Shadow (1995). Galeano’s distinctive style blurred the boundary between literature and political criticism, using short stories, historical fragments, testimony, and irony to reveal structures of power. His work remains especially influential in discussions of Latin American politics, decolonization, dependency, inequality, imperialism, and historical memory.
