Invitation to LRT Anchor Mission Committee Toward New Models of Economic Development

Dear Interested Members of the Latino & Latina Roundtable and friends:

Please see the attached flyer and join our Anchor Mission Committee, which will have its first meeting this Saturday, June 12 at 9 AM (going no later than 10:30) via Zoom here: bit.ly/LRTAnchorZoom, Password: Anchor.
The Committee will meet every other Saturday thru the summer.
This Committee is part of the LRT’s commitment to find a way forward toward a New Economy–more just, more equitable, putting people over profit.
Anchor Institutions are large nonprofits that raise and spend significant sums of money and are “anchored” to the local community in that their success and health is inextricably tied up with the success and health of local people and places. (Typical examples are “eds and meds,” i.e., universities and hospitals.) We will work to implement models that unlock the economic power of such institutions in our region to create jobs for, and investment in, Pomona’s lowest income residents and neighborhoods.
To get an idea of where we are going, see:
Hope to see you there. ¡Adelante!

Request of LRT – Urgent Call: support for the CA VISION Act (floor vote this morning)

From Angela Sanbrano:

Hi NDLON is supporting the VISION Act.   It is urgent to call Assembly members Sabrina Cervantes and Blanca Rubio to support the California Vision Act tomorrow morning.  The district office phone numbers are:  Sabrina Cervantes (951-6860) and Blanca Rubio (626-960-4457)

The VISION Act is the next step toward building the consensus that all people should be treated equally by the criminal justice system.  Specifically, it would end the transfers of people from California’s local jails and prisons to ICE custody, directly challenging the practice of double punishment, double suspicion, and deprivation of due process for immigrants that have served time.

Thanks,

Angela

Professors Alvaro Huerta and Jose Calderon on Univision Interview (Sunday, May 16, 2021 @ 2pm, Pacific Time)

Dear All:
My Univision interview in Spanish, alongside my esteemed colleage/friend José Z. Calderón of Pitzer College, airs this Sunday, May 16, 2021, at 2:00pm (pacific time).
The exact channel is based on your particular location, where it’s easy to find, especially since it’s the largest provider of Spanish-language content in this country. In the pre-recorded interview, we discussed various topics related to the attached Los Angeles Times article on California’s population decline based on the 2020 Census, where we focused on the case of Latinas/os…Has the Golden State lost its luster California population shrinks for first time ever – Los Angeles Times
Cordially,
Álvaro
P.S. Given that it’s a California-centered show, I’m not sure if it’s shown nationwide.

LRT in Unity With Power to the CommUnity: A Community – to – College Pathway

The Latino and Latina Roundtable of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valley is honored to join in this “Power to the CommUnity: A Community-to-College Pathway,” as part of the efforts to create a pathway towards higher education in our communities and particularly  to create a virtual space in the community for youth to be able to learn about the Summer Bridge Program and other services and career pathways offered at Mt. SAC. T

Jose Zapata Calderon

President of the Latino and Latin Roundtable

Hello everyone,

I am excited to announce that the Mt. San Antonio College El Centro and Bridge Programs are hosting an event called, “Power to the CommUnity: A Community-to-College Pathway”. Our intention is to work with community based organizations in order to create a virtual space in the community for youth to be able to learn about the Summer Bridge Program and other services and career pathways offered at Mt. SAC. We want to increase the accessibility of this information and create a pathway towards higher education in our communities. We are hoping that you all would be willing to partner with us on this particular event.

The event will be taking place on Wednesday, May 19th, 2021 from 4pm to 6pm via zoom.

During the event, our team will briefly cover the steps to apply, where to learn more about our vocational programs, where to search for academic majors, and where to learn more about our sports programs. We will then go into detail about the Summer Bridge Program. Furthermore, we will talk about our student support equity programs and give tips on how to stay connected.

Please let me know if you or your organization would be interested in partnering. All you would have to do is spread the word about this event with any of the youth you work with. We would also love to add your logos to the flyer.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to reach out to us at any time.

Kindly,

Fabian Pavon

Invitation to Fernando Pedraza Memorial and Ceremony on Wednesday, May 5

You are invited to the 14th Annual Fernando Pedraza Memorial and Community Celebration that will take place on Wednesday, May 5th on the corner of Arrow Highway and Grove Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga from 8 am – 11 am.  The day laborers and community will gather between 8 and 9 am – and the program of music by Son Real and Jornalero Radio, prayer by Deacon Mario Lopez, and ceremony, and speakers will begin at 9 am.  The memorial and celebration will commemorate the life of Fernando Pedraza and other day laborers who have recently passed away.   If you are attending the event, everyone will be asked to wear a mask and to practice social distancing.  For those who cannot attend physically but want to join in virtually, you can connect to the zoom link at 9 am:  https://pitzer.zoom.us/j/89559545594

On Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), 2007, a spontaneous demonstration by the Minutemen against day laborers on the corner of Arrow Highway and Grove Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga, ended with the death of day laborer leader Jose Fernando Pedraza.  Fifty-seven year old Pedraza died at the corner where he waited on a daily basis for one-day jobs.  It is also the corner where Pedraza organized other day laborers to defend their rights.  In 2002, Pedraza was part of a court case against the City of Rancho Cucamongawho wanted to enforce a law disallowing day laborers to gather on the street.  In the recent months before his death, Pedraza had attended several meetings of the Rancho Cucamongacity council to support his fellow day laborers so that they could have a job center where they could be safe from hate-based attacks and traffic accidents.

Pedraza, a Mexican immigrant and a father of five daughters and the grandfather of seven, was killed at 1 P. M. on May 5, 2007 when an SUV, that hit a car in the intersection, rolled onto the sidewalk where day laborers were gathered.  On any other day, the day laborers would have left by the noon hour.  On this day, the day laborers stayed because the Minutemen showed up to protest the day laborer corner.

The Fernando Pedraza Memorial and Community Celebration is supported by the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center, Latino and Latina Roundtable, Dale Show, and Radio Jornalera.

Jose Calderon is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
