Our 16th Annual Cesar Chavez Breakfast will take place on March 27, 2020 at the Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona, CA. We hope to see you all there. Attached is the save the date for the breakfast and the application for the Social Justice Scholarship. We thank you in advance for sharing this information with your networks and friends.
At the breakfast, we honor community members and leaders who demonstrate and share the 10 core values of Cesar Chavez. The board considers these values when reviewing your nominations-
Service to Others, Sacrifice, Preference to help the most in need and forgotten no matter how difficult the challenge, Determination, Nonviolence, Acceptance of All People, Respect for Life and Environment, Celebrating Community, Knowledge, and Innovation
Latino and Latina Roundtable members have the privilege of nominating individuals. All nominations for honorees are due on January 3rd by 5:00 pm by email. Please include a short bio (300-500 words) of your nominee. Send to Lmira@latinolatinaroundtable.org. You will receive an email confirmation of your submission. The LRT board will select honorees and make a decision by January 7th.

In an effort to get a count on how many of our members will be able to attend the Latino and Latina Roundtable membership meeting this Saturday, November 16th at 1 PM (see the message below), Lina Mira, our director has created an RSVP link. We really need your involvement at this time as we take up the important task of voting on the seven at-large members for our board. So please take a moment of your time and complete the RSVP so that we can ensure the percentage of membership required for our board election on Saturday.

As per our by-laws, the Latino and Latina Roundtable will be electing seven at-large members at its membership meeting on Saturday, November 16th to serve on the board for the next two years. Nominations took place at our General Membership Meeting on Saturday, October 19th (the nominees are listed at the bottom of this message). Our election meeting will take place Saturday, November 16 at 1 PM at the Solidarity Center (1460 E. Holt Ave., Entrance #3 – Room 6 in Pomona).
To be able to vote in the election set for November 16th, you have to be a paid member in good standing (30 days prior to the election). In order to vote at the November 16th election, you also must be present at the meeting. If you have been nominated for the board, as a nominee you should be prepared to make a one-minute statement as to your involvement in the Latino and Latina Roundtable and why you want to be on the board. Any nominee that does not show up to the meeting on Nov. 16th and make a statement will be taken off of the list. We will use computers to vote and a ranked choice system that will be explained at the meeting.

Your invitation to Migrations Conference and Art Installation and Reception
You are invited, (see the message below from Professor Mita Banerjee from IGLAS) to a conference, “Migrations: A Conference on Refugees, Immigration, and Global Movement” on Friday, November 8, 9:30-4 pm, in the McConnell Center, Founders Room at Pitzer College. Professor Suyapa Portillo and I, Jose Calderon, will be on a panel from 10:15-11:15. In addition to the invitation below, Professor Banerjee has attached the flyer and the schedule.
I’m pleased to share the attached flyer and schedule with you, for the IGLAS Conference on Friday November 8 (with a noon hour reading by Kenneth E. Miller on Thurs. Nov. 7). To join us for lunch at the conference on Friday November 8, please send your rsvp to Sandy_Hamilton@pitzer.edu. Again, the the Migrations Conference is this Friday November 8, from 9:30 AM-4 PM, poster & schedule attached.
I wanted to honor the Interdisciplinary nature of our college, and the fact that my best conference experiences have integrated the humanities and arts along with social and physical sciences, by highlighting a couple of events for you. Kenneth E. Miller will do a reading from his book War Torn on Thursday Nov. 7, 12-1 PM, Mead Living Room.
With the generous help of Ciara Ennis, Christopher Michno, and Seth Pringle, there will be an art installation of still images from Ken Miller’s film work with Refugee Communities, presented as a photo montage. This will be located in the Founder’s Room Atrium. Please join us for a wine and cheese reception in that space, beginning at 4 PM on Friday, for an opportunity to see those photos and chat with conference speakers and fellow attendees.

Date Change: LRT Membership Meeting changed to Saturday, October 19th at 1 PM at Solidarity Center
This is to inform you that the Latino and Latina Roundtable board has decided to move our meeting (that was originally set for this Saturday, October 12th) to Saturday, October 19th at the same time (1 PM) and the same place (the Solidarity Center (1460 E. Holt Ave., Entrance #3 – Room 6 in Pomona). This change came as a result of requests from our members who cited that there are three major events in Pomona that day that our members want to attend: the Pomona 5K, the Indigenous Day at which Dolores Huerta is scheduled to be at, and a “College-Going Families” Day at Cal Poly led by Lorena Marquez and the Pomona Leadership Network. We support all theses events and will support all of them including Indigenous Day at Ganesha Park from 10 AM to 7 PM. At our October 19th, we will proceed as planned to take nominations for seven at-large open positions on the LRT board – and you can send in your nomination or that of someone else through e-mail (see the message below). Remember, you must be a paid member of the organization to nominate and to be able to have a final vote in November election. If you are not a member but want to become one, please send your request through e-mail to Jose Calderon or Angela by November 17th.

If you are interested in running for one of the seven at-large positions or you want to nominate someone, please attend the membership meeting on Saturday, October 19th. If you cannot attend the meeting and are a member in good standing, you can send in your nomination by October 19th to one of the contacts listed below (Angela, Jose, or Roberto). Please include a statement as to why you are nominating the person and some background on the nominee and the person’s qualifications.
To be able to vote in the election set for November 16th (or to run for one of the at-large positions), you have to be a paid member in good standing 30 days prior to the election. Hence, you have until October 17th to fill out an application, send it in, and pay your dues if you have not done so already.
