Latino/a Roundtable Dia De Los Muertos – November 3, 2019

Please join Latino/a Roundtable on November 3, 2019 from 3-7 pm at the dA Center for the Arts to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos.   This is a non-commercial event to remember and celebrate our loved ones.  We will have one central altar where you can bring a picture and/or other items of those who have passed.  Time will be set aside for you to share something about them. Other altars will also be part of this event.  Please bring your family. There will be crafts to create, face painting, dance and food to share.  All are welcomed to join.

Latino and Latina Roundtable Election of Seven At-Large Board Members

As per our by-laws, the Latino and Latina Roundtable will be electing seven at-large members at its membership meeting on Saturday, November 16th to serve on the board for the next two years.

Nominations will take place at the next General Membership Meeting scheduled for Saturday, October 12th at 1 PM at the Solidarity Center (1460 E. Holt Ave., Entrance #3 – Room 6 in Pomona).  If you are interested in running for one of the seven at-large positions or you want to nominate someone, please attend the membership meeting on Saturday, October 12th.    If you cannot attend the meeting and are a member in good standing, you can send in your nomination by October 12th to one of the contacts listed below (Angela, Jose, or Roberto).  Please include a statement as to why you are nominating the person and some background on the nominee and the person’s qualifications.

To be able to vote in the election set for November 16th (or to run for one of the at-large positions), you have to be a paid member in good standing 30 days prior to the election.  Hence, you have until October 17th to fill out an application and pay your dues if you have not done so already.

On the 28th of September Immigrant Rights activists, Misael Reyes Honduran Asylum petitioner, Hector Barajas, Director of Deported Veterans , Latino Latina Round Table and many others will gather in Redlands to support the work of Building Bridges.

40th Anniversary Commemoration of the Greensboro Massacre

There will be a national commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the Greensboro Massacre in Greensboro, North Carolina November 1-3, 2019.  Old friends from across the country will converge for a weekend of events that will include a graveside ceremony, a reading of the award-winning playwright Emily Mann’s “Greensboro:  A Requiem,” a legal panel on current civil rights issues in the South, and a service at the Beloved Community Center,led by Reverend Nelson and Joyce Johnson.  A Los Angeles delegation will be traveling to take part in the national commemoration.

On Sunday, November 17, there will be a Los Angeles commemoration at 12 noon at the UCLA Labor Center, 675 S Park View St, Los Angeles, CA 90057.  A number of guests from out-of-town are expected.  More details to follow in the near future.
The current rise of white nationalism, xenophobia, attacks on women’s rights, and corporate tyranny call on us to reflect on the lessons of November 3rd and our continuing fight for economic, racial and social justice.  I hope you can join us.

Please save the date:  The next membership meeting of the Latino and Latina Roundtable meeting is on Saturday, August 17 beginning at 1 PM at the Solidarity Center at the Village

(1460 E. Holt Ave. in Pomona — Entrance #3 – Classroom 6).   The meeting will include: update and status of director search and process; reports on community development and immigrant rights work; summary of recent forums (New Economy, The Future of Education) and plans for upcoming forums on Leadership Development, Economic Democracy, etc.).  The meeting will also include plans for a clean-up day at Cesar Chavez Park on September 7, responses to immigrant attacks, Border Bridges Project, College for all Coalition, and status of rent control, street vendor, and police commission initiatives.

As Part of the Latino and Latina Roundtable Academy series – you are invited to a forum on “The Future of Education” on August 6th,
7-9 pm, at the Solidarity Center (1460 E. Holt Ave. Ste 6, Pomona) that includes panellists who will share their visions about education, both locally and on a larger scale. Assistant Superintendent Lillia Fuentes, Directors Kathrine Morillo-Shone and Stacey Wilkins, as well as educator and LRT board member Ion Puschila will discuss different ideas about the direction of education.  Profe Calderon will facilitate and the audience will be open to Q and A. We look forward to seeing you!

The LRT is a membership organization with a strong track record in immigrant, education, and community rights organizing and empowerment.
