The Cesar Chavez Pilgrimage Committee, comprised of a coalition of local leaders, parents, students, teachers, and community groups, invites
you on Friday February 12 (from 4 pm – 7 pm to be part of a pot-luck ceremony to remember past organizers and to make flags and posters for the annual Cesar Chavez Pilgrimage march at Cesar Chavez Park (2720 Barjud Ave. in Pomona). Please bring a dish and drink to share.
For Saturday, April 13, we invite you to be part of the Cesar Chavez Pilgrimage march beginning at 9:30 A. M., under the theme “Opportunity through Unity, Migration Makes this Nation” from the Pomona School District Education Center (800 S. Garey Ave.) to Garey High School (321 W. Lexington Ave., Pomona, Ca). The annual community pilgrimage march and festival focuses each year on key issues affecting our diverse communities and uses all the proceeds from the event to present scholarships. This year’s march and festival focuses on the contributions that our immigrant and refugee families have contributed and continue to contribute to our economy, education, faith, culture, and history. This year’s Cesar Chavez Social Justice scholarship recipients, who represent the values of using their lives in connecting their learning to community engagement and service are: Melissa Soria, Marilyn Lucas, Cristian Jimenez, Evelyn Casa, and Diana Valencia.
Andres Chavez, grandson of Cesar Chavez and with the Cesar Chavez Foundation, will be one of the speakers and help lead the march and festival. The march, beginning with a ceremony at 9:30 A. M. in front of the PUSD Administrative Offices, will include elder leaders from the community including Superintendent Richard Martinez, Civil Rights and past farmworker organizer Magdaleno Rose-Avila, Reverend Jan Chase, Bishop Herbert Wilkins, and Ohlone Tribal Leader Dee Dee Manzaneres who will honor a 300-year old tree, symbolizing respect for our elders and the sacredness of the environment. After, a pilgrimage walk, led by Danza Grupo Toyaacan, will make its way to Garey High School where Garey High School Principal Marco A. Sanchez, Service Learning Coordinator Paul Knopf, Community Schools coordinator Melissa Ayala, and Cesar Chavez Foundation leader Andres Chavez will present scholarships and lead the planting of a small tree representing the sacredness of our quality of life and our young people. The entertainment will include the Son Real Band, Danza Azteca Toyaacan, Ballet Folklorico Jalisco No Te Rajes, Le Chic Filipino Dance Group, Spoken Word artists Fabian Pavon and Alex Xipecoatl Juarez. Food will be made by the parents with all the proceeds going to student scholarships. This year, a special recognition will be made by the Cesar Chavez Pilgrimage Committee and the City of Pomona to the parents for their years of service to this event.

I am writing to request your support for our fifteenth annual Cesar Chavez Breakfast that will take place on Friday, March 29, 2019, from 8 A. M. to 10 A. M. (with registration between 7 and 8 AM) at the Sheraton Fairplex Conference Center (601 W McKinley Ave., Gate 3) in Pomona. With your support, in the last year, our Latino and Latina Roundtable has been able to fund an office and a full-time director. However, as in the past, the work of our organization is primarily led by community volunteer organizers who ask for nothing in return but the forward progress of our leadership-building efforts through our immigrant rights, community development, and education committees. In keeping with our grass-roots organizing character, we continue to keep the cost at a minimum to ensure that the tradition is in keeping with the celebration of the life of Cesar Chavez and the many leaders, from all backgrounds, who have historically given of their lives to ensure a future with justice and equity. In keeping with the tradition of honoring individuals in our region who exemplify these principles and values, this year the Roundtable is honoring: Sylvia Carranza (Community Organizer at UFCW Local 1428); Eddie Gonzalez (Community Organizer at SEIU Local 2015 and former organizer with the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center); Tim Sandoval (Mayor of the City of Pomona); and James Sanbrano (a community-based Lawyer receiving the Community Star Award for his consistent efforts in defending the human and civil rights of our communities). In addition, Social Justice Scholarships will be presented to students from the region who exemplify the values of connecting their studies to community engagement and social change. The Latino and Latina Roundtable, together with UPV MECHA, is sponsoring a forum and panel on the issue of Ethnic Studies on January 31 at the PUSD Education Center Boardroom (800 South Garey Ave. in Pomona) from 6:30-8:30. Before his term ended, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bill AB 2772 that would have set up a three-year pilot program allowing 11 school districts that would be picked from throughout California to require students to take a semester or year of ethnic studies in order to graduate. The new Governor Gavin Newsom and the new CA Superintendent of Education Tony Thurmond have stated their support of such an initiative. This forum, as part of a series of forums by the Roundtable Academy, will discuss why there is a need for Ethnic Studies in our schools and the strategies for making it a reality. The forum, part of a series of Roundtable Academy forums, includes the following panelists: Fabian Pavon, a graduate of PUSD, UC-Santa Barbara, and presently in Student Support Services at Mt. San Antonio Community College: Fatima Acuna, Graduate of the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State University, Northridge; Alejandro Juarez, graduate of Mt. Sac and UCLA student majoring in Chicanx Studies and Minoring in Education and African Studies; Dora Gomez-Lopez, a graduate with an M. A. from the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State Northridge; and Irene Sanchez, a Chicano/a and Latino/a Studies High School Teacher in Azusa USD.
