Community Forum on immigrant Rights

The Community Development Committee of the Latino and Latina Roundtable invites you to a forum on recent contemporary developments on immigrant rights issues – (including a Supreme Court case that will exclude immigrants from being counted in how Congressional districts are developed) —  and responses (including campaigns for the right of immigrants to vote, continued support for DACA/PACA, —  and what we can do to advance legalization efforts).   The forum, including presentations by  Angela Sanbrano, John Nolte, Jose Calderon, and Madeline Rios, will facilitate  discussion by all those attending on these issues and the road ahead.  ?xml:namespace prefix = “o” ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” /

Support Rite Aid Workers

Rite Aid workers are in a tough contract with their employer. We have been negotiating with Rite Aid since May and the company has refused to move off of some proposals that would do great damage to the retirement, health insurance and working conditions our members have fought hard to not only establish but to protect for many years!!

The company is proposing to due away with retiree health care!! There are many Rite Aid workers who have been working for the company since it was Thrifty Drug!! Now when so many are preparing to enter the next phase of their life the company decides that these hard working people will have to set those plans aside because this profitable and growing company wants to change the rules on them and break a promise that was made to them by Rite Aid!!

The company wants to pass along any and all increases in health insurance coverage to the members!! Our members have been fighting for affordable health care for a long time! They have taken on increases in cost and seen reductions in their coverage all in the name of trying to help their company when it was struggling and on the verge of bankruptcy!! Now that the company is growing and acquiring other assets they want the workers who saved this company to accept double digit increases in health care cost, while the CEO and executives continue to line their pockets with the profits that are made by these hard working and loyal employees all while pushing these workers further into poverty!

The company is proposing to eliminate the 40hr work week! Rite Aid is saying this will only affect new hires but we know from past experience this will only cause division in the workplace and will ultimately put a target on older workers!! The company says this won’t happen but we all know that when a corporation has the opportunity to get rid of older more expensive workers they will do it every time!!! How can we trust the company to keep this promise when they are also looking to break the promise of being able to retire with dignity or the promise of having affordable health care for yourself and your family!!

These proposals and many more that I didn’t list are what our members are fighting against!!

We need your help!!

We are asking if you can join us for an action in front of a Rite Aid store near you?

We will be handling customers and asking them to sign a petition supporting the workers!

Can you join us?

We hope to see you at one or more of these locations

Film and Platica

You are invited (by MECHA, Latino and Latina Roundtable, and Cesar Chavez Pilgrimage Committee) to the first of many future film gatherings and platicas on issues pertinent to our communities. This first film, (this Friday, July 17th at 6:30 PM at the dA Center – 252 D South Main Street in Pomona ) by the legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler, features Latino actor Robert Beltran who plays the part of Eddie Guerrero, a Latino soldier who ends his tour of duty in Vietnam only to find his identity and beliefs challenged by another war in Latin America.

From Melissa Ayala:  Come join us as we watch the film Latino in community. Our group Unity in the Community seeks to bring dialogue about historic issues that are still affecting us today. We will be watching this film and will have presenters discussing the film afterwards. Everyone is welcome. We will begin to watch the film at 6:30 pm. Bring your own snacks!! 🙂

Column on Journalist/Organizer Ignacio Lopez and his Contributions in the Region

A column today by Jim Blalock in the Daily Bulletin on a piece of history on journalist and organizer Ignacio Lopez, for whom a school is named after in the Pomona School District.  It is an example of why we need Chican@, Latin@, Labor, Gender, and Ethnic Studies – to bring to center stage such individuals as Ignacio Lopez (who, like Felicita and Gonzalo Mendez, Roberto Alvarez, Ernesto Galarza, Gloria Anzaldua, Jessica Govea, Kenneth Clarke, Fred Korematzu, Chief Joseph, and so many others) are often left out of our history books. It is important to know that school boards in cities such as Pasadena, Santa Ana, Riverside, and Los Angeles, at one time, supported the segregation of Mexican students into so-called “Mexican schools” on the basis that they could not speak English and were not able to be assimilated or “Americanized.” Ignacio Lopez was an example of one who returned from college with a journalism degree and used his skills and abilities, not just to write and expose segregation, but to actively organize against all forms of discrimination.

Second column on civil rights journalist Ignacio Lopez

Second in a series of columns on journalist and organizer Ignacio Lopez, for whom a school is named after in the Pomona School District.  He was an example of one who used his writing skills and abilities to fight segregation — someone who returned from college to his community — to develop a newspaper — and to, not just write about and to expose racism and discrimination — but to use his organizing skills to rally the communities in the region to change unjust laws and policies.
