Community Remembering The Life Of Day Laborer Leader Fernando Pedraza On Cinco De Mayo

Jornaleros (Day Laborers) and community remembering the life of day laborer leader Fernando Pedraza on Cinco De Mayo May 5 at the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center. Fernando Pedraza was a day laborer, an organizer and a leader. He strived every day to make the corner at Arrow and Grove in Rancho Cucamonga a safe and positive place for workers. Tragically he was killed on May 5, 2007 by a vehicle collision during a Minutemen protest at the corner. At the memorial and celebration – all committed to continue the mission and efforts of Pedraza, to ensure immigrant rights and full legalization and democratic rights for our immigrant and Jornalero families.

#workersrightswednesday Update: Victory in Pomona: A Win for Workers’ Rights!
On 5/19/25, the Pomona City Council and Mayor unanimously approved a motion to strengthen labor enforcement in our city. Instead of deputizing the City Attorney’s office, the city will now partner with the LA County District Attorney’s Office to apply for joint funding that will bring dedicated enforcement staff focused on labor violations right here in Pomona.
This is a win for workers across industries from #householdworkers to #daylaborers who are too often left without recourse when they experience wage theft.
PEOC will be directly involved in shaping this new enforcement model to ensure it stays:
✅ Worker-informed
✅ Centered on justice
✅ A safe resource for immigrant workers
Thank you for fighting with us. Together, we made this happen.

Jornaleros No Están Solos

Fernando Pedraza Memorial and Community Celebration

In Rancho Cucamonga, day laborers, students, and community-based organizations will commemorate the life of Fernando Pedraza, a father – a grandfather – a day laborer leader who had won a court case allowing day laborers to gather on the corner — who died seven years ago when he stood alongside other day laborers – like any other day – waiting for a job. Little did they know that the Minute Men would use this day – Cinco de Mayo – as a day to protest the Rancho Cucamonga day laborers. On any other day, the workers would have been gone by noon – but because of the Minute Men presence – they stayed on. An auto collision in this intersection resulted in the death of our brother Fernando. He died at a time when he had been advocating to the Rancho Cucamonga city council for a day labor center. The Memorial and Celebration, that remembers Fernando and all day laborers and workers who have sacrificed so much in their lives, will take place on Thursday, May 5 at 10 A. M. at the Arrow and Grove corner where Fernando looked for work each day — and where day laborers still congregate to search for jobs.

Thank you so much! Will see you tomorrow!

“En el Centro Jornalero tenemos la costumbre de festejar la independencia de México, al igual que la de Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, y Honduras, con una rica comida y convivio y nuestras amistades de la comunidad y de las universidades.

También aprovechamos para aprender nuestra historia y vincular las luchas históricas con las actuales. Se le hace la cordial invitación a cada uno y una de ustedes!

#upcomingevents #markyourcalendars every year we celebrate#fiestaspatrias at the #PEOC #daylabor center, with food, music, and community. Since #Mexico#Guatemala#ElSalvador#Nicaragua,#CostaRica, and #Honduras all share the same #independenceday, it is a good opportunity to build bridges between the #Mexican and#CentralAmerican communities, as well as the #Chicanx and u.s.-born communities. And since #independence was (and is) a protracted#struggle, it gives us a chance to root ourselves in our history and connect to our current struggles. So please swing by beginning at 10:am on Tuesday #September15 and join us!”
