I am writing to request your support for our 13th Annual Cesar Chavez Breakfast that will take place on Friday, March 24, 2017, from 8 A. M. to 10 A. M. (with registration between 7 and 8 AM) at the Conference Center at the Fairplex, California Ballroom (601 W McKinley Ave., Gate 3) in Pomona. The Latino and Latina Roundtable, as you know, continues to move forward with the commitment and dedication of dozens of volunteers and the resources that are raised from this yearly fundraiser.  In keeping with our grass-roots base, we continue to keep the cost at a minimum to ensure that the tradition is in keeping with the celebration of the life of Cesar Chavez and the many leaders, from all backgrounds, who have historically given of their lives to ensure a more equal and just society. In keeping with the tradition of honoring leaders in our region who have exemplified the principles and values of Cesar Chavez, the Roundtable this year is honoring:  Manuel Castillejos, Professor, Mt. San Antonio College, Eloise Gomez Reyes, California Assembly Member, Dist. 47, Paul Knoph, Service Learning Coordinator, PUSD and Kiki Hafia, Owner of Mercado La Cachanilla.  In addition, scholarships will be presented to students from the region  who exemplify the work of Cesar Chavez through their community engagement in social justice issues.  This is your invitation to our annual Latino and Latina Roundtable retreat that will take place this  Saturday, February 11th (beginning with Cafecito and Registration at 9:00 A. M. and with the retreat business starting 9:30 A. M.) at the Pitzer College Broad Center, Room 208 (1050 N. Mills Ave. in Claremont.  Morning refreshments and a noon lunch will be available for participants.  As we have done in the past, the members will summarize what was accomplished in the year 2016 and together we will develop priorities/plans and a calendar for 2017.  We are looking forward to having your participation at this most important meeting.  In another message this week, we will send you a copy of the agenda.

If you have not paid your membership for this year, applications will be available at the meeting (the membership dues for one year are $25.00 for individuals and $10.00 for students, retirees, and low income individuals).  You are welcome to invite other prospective members but, in order to vote, they will have to become members.

The Latino(a) Roundtable is now accepting applications for their 2017 Social Justice Scholarship. Please help us in spreading the word and identifying activists who can benefit from financial support. We want to recognize and encourage students contributions to their community and working for social justice.

Eligibility:

1. For any high school seniors or college students who will be pursuing an undergraduate degree during the 2017-18 school year

2. Be a resident of San Gabriel or Pomona Valley

3. Be involved in activism/ working towards social justice

My name is Carlos Yanes, I was a recipient of the social justice scholarship awarded in March by the Latina/o Roundtable. I’m in my final year at the University of La Verne and I am currently working for the Office of Civic & Community Involvement. This year the office will host its 5th annual Latino Education Access and Development (LEAD) conference.

The conference is free and open to parents, middle school, high school, and college students. Workshops for parents are bilingual. Throughout the course of the conference workshops will delve into topics such as what it means to be a first generation college student, the process of writing a personal statement, STEM majors, college strategies, self-identity, cultural wealth, and financial aid. These topics provide valuable insight not only to Latino students, but all students interested in higher education. This event offers a great opportunity to extend someone’s understanding of a university farther than what we research. A student will benefit from this experience as we seek to spark an interest or fan an existent flame in a student.

The conference takes place at the University of La Verne on Saturday, Oct. 29th from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.
