My name is Carlos Yanes, I was a recipient of the social justice scholarship awarded in March by the Latina/o Roundtable. I’m in my final year at the University of La Verne and I am currently working for the Office of Civic & Community Involvement. This year the office will host its 5th annual Latino Education Access and Development (LEAD) conference.
The conference is free and open to parents, middle school, high school, and college students. Workshops for parents are bilingual. Throughout the course of the conference workshops will delve into topics such as what it means to be a first generation college student, the process of writing a personal statement, STEM majors, college strategies, self-identity, cultural wealth, and financial aid. These topics provide valuable insight not only to Latino students, but all students interested in higher education. This event offers a great opportunity to extend someone’s understanding of a university farther than what we research. A student will benefit from this experience as we seek to spark an interest or fan an existent flame in a student.
