Participate in Plans for PUSD College For All Forum

This is a reminder of your invitation to join the Latino and Latina Roundtable Community Development Committee, NAACP Pomona Valley Chapter, and the Pomona Unified School district to participate in a presentation and discussion with Betty Hung, from the College for All Coalition, on Thursday, November 10 at 7 PM at the PUSD board room (800 S. Garey Ave.) in Pomona.  The presentation and discussion will focus on SB-1050 College for All and how the funding from this legislation will provide more funding for college readiness resources, expand college enrollment slots, and expand educational opportunity for LCFF plus students and students from first generation backgrounds.  With Pomona being an LCFF+ school district, it will receive funding for these purposes. There will be an opportunity for  Q & A and audience participation after the presentations.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS EN CENTRO DE LABOR: ACORDANDO JORNALEROS

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS EN CENTRO DE LABOR: ACORDANDO JORNALEROS

NOVIEMBRE 2, 2016 –
POR JOSE ZAPATA CALDERON

14947606_1197723110297444_7882883744586374188_n

LA + Parks = Awesome (YES on Measure A!)

Los Angeles is ranked 45 out of the 60 largest cities in the United States for park accessibility.(1) Not only is LA considered “park poor,” its current parks need an estimated $21.5 billion for building and maintenance, but our funding is running out.(2)

But this November 8 Angelenos have the power to bring back stable funding to maintain safe and clean neighborhood parks by voting YES on Measure A.

Ask your family and friends on Facebook to support Measure A in Los Angeles!

Not on social media? Click here to send an email!

Right now, fifty-one percent of LA County residents don’t live within a ten minute walk of a park.(3) By comparison, in New York, that number is less than 5%.(4) Luckily Measure A would help bridge that gap.

Measure A would provide funding through an annual parcel tax of 1.5 cents per square foot to raise up to $94 million annually to update and build local parks, improve recreation and senior centers, plant drought tolerant landscaping, and more.(5) Additionally, 13% of the measure would prioritize communities that do not have parks or where parks are in poor condition.(6) That means neighborhoods in South Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Valley, and parts of the San Fernando Valley will get the parks they need and deserve.

Share your support for Measure A to upgrade the parks we love and build new ones in Los Angeles on Facebook!

Numerous studies have shown that parks and open spaces improve physical activity and psychological well-being.(7) But forty-one percent of lower-income households in Los Angeles do not have immediate access to a park at all.(8)

In 1996, Angelenos passed a tax that provided funding for our parks. The tax is set to expire in 2019.(9) Its companion tax expired last year. With funding for our parks running dry in Los Angeles — one of the most dense, overcrowded, urban areas in the nation — the need for green spaces couldn’t be more urgent, especially for those in park deprived areas.

To increase park equity in Los Angeles, Angelenos need to pass Measure A to ensure stable and consistent funding to build and maintain our parks before it’s too late. But we need thousands of LA residents like you, Jose, to support Measure A this November!

Invitation to three plays directed by Alma Martinez

Don’t miss —

Tres Actos:

The Militants, Vietnam Campesino & Los Vendidos

The University of La Verne Department of Theatre Arts presents three plays by internationally renowned playwright, theatre and film director Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit, La Bamba). Directed by Artist-in-Residence Alma Martinez, Tres Actos: The Militants, Vietnam Campesino & Los Vendidos performances run November 10, 11, 12 at 7:30pm, November 17, 18, 19 at 7:30pm, and November 20 at 2pm in the Dailey Theatre located on the main campus at 1950 3rd St.

La Verne, CA 91750.

The “actos,” or short plays, were first performed by Valdez’s theatre company, El Teatro Campesino. He founded the company in 1965 in the heat of the United Farmworkers union’s struggle to secure basic labor and human rights for the most vulnerable of the U.S. labor force. These “actos”, that are now classics of American agitprop theater, were performed by striking farm workers on picket lines, flatbed trucks, and at pivotal historic events such as the 1965 Delano Grape Strike and the 1966 United Farmworker Union’s march to Sacramento.

Suggested donation is $5 for students, $10 for staff, senior citizens and alumni, and $12 for general admission. Reservations can be made through Eventbrite at: http://tres-actos-tix.eventbrite.com

LEAD Conference (10/29/16)

My name is Carlos Yanes, I was a recipient of the social justice scholarship awarded in March by the Latina/o Roundtable. I’m in my final year at the University of La Verne and I am currently working for the Office of Civic & Community Involvement. This year the office will host its 5th annual Latino Education Access and Development (LEAD) conference.

The conference is free and open to parents, middle school, high school, and college students. Workshops for parents are bilingual. Throughout the course of the conference workshops will delve into topics such as what it means to be a first generation college student, the process of writing a personal statement, STEM majors, college strategies, self-identity, cultural wealth, and financial aid. These topics provide valuable insight not only to Latino students, but all students interested in higher education. This event offers a great opportunity to extend someone’s understanding of a university farther than what we research. A student will benefit from this experience as we seek to spark an interest or fan an existent flame in a student.

If you are interested in attending, you can check out the link below. If not, please share the information with anyone who you think could benefit from this opportunity and encourage them register. The conference takes place at the University of La Verne on Saturday, Oct. 29th from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

If you have any questions, please contact engagement@laverne.edu and I hope that you consider attending or share the info. Here is the website with more information and the registration link and there is a flyer attached for your reference. Please share with your network.

Thank you and have a great day!
