Invitation to Forum on Ethnic Studies on January 31 at 6:30 PM at PUSD Education Center Boardroom

The Latino and Latina Roundtable, together with UPV MECHA, is sponsoring a forum and panel on the issue of Ethnic Studies on January 31 at the PUSD Education Center Boardroom (800 South Garey Ave. in Pomona) from 6:30-8:30.  Before his term ended, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bill  AB 2772 that would have set up a three-year pilot program allowing 11 school districts that would be picked from throughout California to require students to take a semester or year of ethnic studies in order to graduate.  The new Governor Gavin Newsom and the new CA Superintendent of Education Tony Thurmond have stated their support of such an initiative.  This forum, as part of a series of forums by the Roundtable Academy, will discuss why there is a need for Ethnic Studies in our schools and the strategies for making it a reality.  The forum, part of a series of Roundtable Academy forums, includes the following panelists:  Fabian Pavon, a graduate of PUSD, UC-Santa Barbara, and presently in Student Support Services at Mt. San Antonio Community College: Fatima Acuna, Graduate of the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State University, Northridge; Alejandro Juarez, graduate of Mt. Sac and UCLA student majoring in Chicanx Studies and Minoring in Education and African Studies; Dora Gomez-Lopez, a graduate with an M. A. from the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State Northridge; and Irene Sanchez, a Chicano/a and Latino/a Studies High School Teacher in Azusa USD.

Message to LLRT

My birthday is just around the corner on January 8th and, in lieu of gifts or cards for my birthday,  I would like to ask friends and allies to give the gift of becoming a member (or to renew your membership) of the Latino and Latina Roundtable of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valley.  This would be the highest gift of respect that you could give for all our work that we carry out daily in the interests of our communities. The application is attached with this request. The membership dues for one year are $25.00 for individuals and $10.00 for students, retirees, and low income individuals.  Your dues help to sustain our organizing and advocacy efforts.  As you know, our organization has always been a volunteer organization that is primarily sustained through membership dues and a yearly fundraiser.  Only until recently, have we rented an office and hired an executive director which brings forward new fundraising challenges. All the work of our community development, cultural, college for all, immigrant rights, annual breakfast, and scholarship committees are carried out by community-based organizers who have committed their lives to ensure justice and equity for our communities. We are continually motivated through our practice of an “abundance mentality” where we continue to see the outcomes of our efforts in training and developing new leaders through our organization.   In supporting our organization through your membership, you are helping to sustain the inspiration and efforts of our members  in organizing an annual Cesar Chavez breakfast and Pilgrimage march that provide scholarships and honor community-based leaders in our region; in sustaining the beauty of our culture through Dia de Los Muertos and “mural/sacred space” preservation in places like Cesar Chavez Park; in advancing our collaboration with area schools and colleges through the College4All Coalition in implementing a school-to-college pipeline; in implementing educational forums and workshops through a Roundtable Academy on key issues facing our communities; in carrying out voter, ballot, driver’s license, health for all, immigrant rights initiatives; in advancing our efforts to support workers and unions in our region; and in ensuring our ongoing participation in numerous coalitions on social justice and quality of life issues.  If you have questions or need me to send you the application by email, please contact me at Jose_Calderon@Pitzer.edu

Reminder of your Invitation to Forum on Educational Justice Movement on Nov. 27th, 6:30 PM, in PUSD Education Center Board Room

You are cordially invited to a forum the Educational Justice Movement on November 27th in the PUSD Education Center Board Room from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  The forum will focus on the book anthology on the Educational Justice Movement , Lift Us Up, Don’t Push Us Out: Voices from the Front Lines of the Educational Justice Movement.  The forum will include a panel comprised of Mark Warren (distinguished professor and editor from UMASS), myself, Claudia Bedolla (Latino/a Roundtable), and Jeanette Ellis-Royston (from the NAACP)The forum will take place from 6:30-8:30 with a book signing at the end.

In addition to an article that I wrote in the book connecting the immigrant rights and educational justice movements, the book includes stories and examples of how students of color and their parents have been building coalitions to advance alternatives to historic inequities.  The contributors argue that what is needed “is a movement led by those most affected by injustice – students of color and their parents – that builds alliances across sectors and with other social justice movements addressing immigration, LGBTQ rights, and the school -to-prison pipeline.”

We are hoping that you can attend and join in the discussion after the presentations.  Please help us in getting the word out.  We would appreciate any help that you can give us.  Thank you for your time on this.
