The Latino and Latina Roundtable, together with UPV MECHA, is sponsoring a forum and panel on the issue of Ethnic Studies on January 31 at the PUSD Education Center Boardroom (800 South Garey Ave. in Pomona) from 6:30-8:30.  Before his term ended, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bill  AB 2772 that would have set up a three-year pilot program allowing 11 school districts that would be picked from throughout California to require students to take a semester or year of ethnic studies in order to graduate.  The new Governor Gavin Newsom and the new CA Superintendent of Education Tony Thurmond have stated their support of such an initiative.  This forum, as part of a series of forums by the Roundtable Academy, will discuss why there is a need for Ethnic Studies in our schools and the strategies for making it a reality.  The forum, part of a series of Roundtable Academy forums, includes the following panelists:  Fabian Pavon, a graduate of PUSD, UC-Santa Barbara, and presently in Student Support Services at Mt. San Antonio Community College: Fatima Acuna, Graduate of the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State University, Northridge; Alejandro Juarez, graduate of Mt. Sac and UCLA student majoring in Chicanx Studies and Minoring in Education and African Studies; Dora Gomez-Lopez, a graduate with an M. A. from the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Cal State Northridge; and Irene Sanchez, a Chicano/a and Latino/a Studies High School Teacher in Azusa USD.

You are invited to a forum on the book Lift Us Up, Don’t Push Us Out: Voices from the Front Lines of the Educational Justice Movement on November 27th at the PUSD Education Center Board room (800 South Garey Ave. in Pomona) from 6:30-8:30 where a a panel will present on this book.   The forum, part of a series of Roundtable Academy forums, will include a panel comprised of Mark Warren (distinguished professor and editor from UMASS), Jose Calderon and Claudia Bedolla (Latino/a Roundtable), and Jeanette Ellis-Royston (from the NAACP). Fabian Pavon will present one of his poems.  The forum will take place from 6:30-8:30 with a book purchasing and signing at the end. 

  In addition to an article connecting the immigrant rights and educational justice movements in the local area, the book includes stories and examples of how students of color and their parents have been building coalitions to advance alternatives to historic inequities.  The contributors argue that what is needed “is a movement led by those most affected by injustice – students of color and their parents – that builds alliances across sectors and with other social justice movements addressing immigration, LGBTQ rights, and the school -to-prison pipeline.”  Since the forum is immediately after the Thanksgiving break, we need your help in inviting other parents, students, teachers, and community people who might be interested in this forum.  Please text, e-mail, facebook, and call your contacts.  Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on November 27th
