Articles on recent Latino and Latina Roundtable support of immigrant rights efforts:

RALLY AT POMONA CITY HALL IN SUPPORT OF DACA RECIPIENTS
“The message in Pomona
– made clear in a news
conference and rally organized
by the Latina/Latino Roundtable…
of Pomona and San Gabriel Valleys
the day after the announcement
in Washington – was that
Pomona will be here for them.”
“On behalf of the City of Pomona,
let me make this clear –
we want to welcome all of you,
this is your home, and I can
say unequivocally that the City
of Pomona supports its DACA
family,” Pomona Mayor Tim
Sandoval told a crowd of more
than 200 speaking from the steps
of the City Council Chambers.
“It’s unconscionable, it’s unimaginable,
it’s unreasonable,
it’s immoral that in 2017 we’re
having this conversation and that
we have to come together.”

RSVP for Salinas Farmworker Event

RE:  Inland Empire Salinas Farmworker Support

We have sent you a request for support before — and now we are getting to the deadline of RSVP’s and getting people to support the Salinas Farmworker Fundraiser.  First, we request that you RSVP if you have not.  Secondly, we would like to ask you, as a farmworker supporter,  to help us by making one last effort to get your contacts to RSVP by sending them a personal message through e-mail, text, facebook, and phone call.  This is also to remind you of the last organizing meeting of the IE Salinas Farmworker Center Support Committee before the fundraiser (set for Sunday, October 8 at 1 PM at the Pitzer College Broad Center Room 208 – 1050 N. Mills Ave.).

Again, I am writing to ask for your support of a fundraiser Tardeada on Sunday, October 15 (beginning at 2 PM) at the home of Jerry Ryan (410 Lemonwood Ave. in Redlands, CA).  Our special guests will be Arturo Rodriguez, national president of the UFW and UFW co-founder and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta.  The cost for the dinner is very affordable at $35 for single and $50 for a couple.  Please RSVP to Rose Calderon by October 1 at calderon.rose@gmail.com and send your checks (only cash or checks will be accepted), made out in the name of the United Farm Workers to ATT: Rose Calderon, 613 N. Northcape Ave., San Dimas, CA 91773.   This fundraiser is for the purpose of building a “Salinas Farm Worker Center” in the Salinas Valley which was a dream of Cesar Chavez.  In the past, the UFW has always supported our efforts in this region and now they are asking for our support.  At a minimal level, I would like to ask for your support by participating in the October 15th Tardeada (and if you cannot attend – sending in a donation).  If you wish to donate more, a let

ter and a contribution form are attached which explain how you can have your name (or that of someone else whom you want to honor) on the Tree of Justice at the Center when it opens.  My purpose in writing this personal note is to have you attend the Tardeada which I can assure will be a moving experience with the honored guests, a dinner, and the music of the community-based band Son Real.

Support Salinas Farm Workers

Inland Empire Committee in Support of Salinas Farm Worker Center

613 N. Northcape Ave., San Dimas, CA 91773

We are reaching out to you to ask for your support of the United Farm Workers in its efforts to build a “Salinas Farm Worker Center” in the Salinas Valley which was a dream of Cesar Chavez.  We are a group, named the Inland Empire Committee in Support of the Salinas Farmworker Center, who is comprised of individuals that have been members or supported the UFW over the years.

In the 1970’s the Salinas Valley saw the largest farm worker strike in U.S. history resulting in the jailing of Cesar Chavez for two weeks but ultimately winning higher wages for grape and lettuce farm workers. In 1997, 30,000 marched in that area for strawberry workers and there are today 65,000 farm worker families in the Salinas area.  The new Farm Worker Center would allow farm workers to meet, learn and receive vital services, such as immigration legal services and Know Your Rights information provided by the UFW Foundation. Now, farm workers themselves have contributed to buy a building in downtown Salinas.

As part of our contribution to support this effort, we are holding a FUNDRAISER TARDEADA on Sunday, October 15 (beginning at 2 PM) at the home of Jerry Ryan (410 Lemonwood Ave. in Redlands, CA). Our special guests will be Arturo Rodriguez, national president of the UFW and UFW co-founder and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta. The cost for the dinner is $35 for single and $50 for a couple. You can also send a donation to this same address even if you cannot attend. Attached is a Salinas Farm Worker Center Contribution Form if you wish to donate more. For a tree of justice, a leaf is $350 and a rock or fruit is $500. For those contributing to the Tree of Justice or the Black Eagle Honor Wall for this event, the cost of the dinner will be included. For information, call Jerry Ryan at 909-816-1187 or Jose Calderon at 909-952-1640.

Sincerely,

Protest Rally- No New Bracero Program! Friday, Sept 8

The UNITED FARMWORKERS UNION & supporters will be conducting a protest THIS FRIDAY, SEPT. 8, 11:00 AM at CONGRESSMAN PETE AGUILAR’s DISTRICT OFFICE, @ 685 E. CARNEGIE DRIVE, SAN BERNARDINO, CA., ( near HOSPITALITY LANE ) as a result of Congressman Aguilar’s support of an expansion of the horrific H2A law. The H2A law is VERY SIMILAR to the old, draconian ‘ BRACERO PROGRAM’ which was a near ‘slave labor’ system wherein scrupulous growers had a unending supply of low wage, docile work force that were FORCED to work for one particular grower, even when the grower would NOT honor the minimum provisions called for. CESAR CHAVEZ & DOLORES HUERTA successfully lobbied congress in the early sixties to eliminate the BRACERO PROGRAM but the proposed expansion of H2A ( which is currently allowable only under certain circumstances ) would open the flood gates once again, going from temporary to year round and also apply to dairies, which are currently not included. ALL INTERESTED IN FAIRNESS FOR FARMWORKERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND !
