Officer Nominations and Elections for Latino and Latina Roundtable Board

To:  Members of the Latino and Latina Roundtable 

As per our by-laws, the Latino and Latina Roundtable will be electing the four board officer positions (President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer) at its membership meeting on Saturday, November 21 (1 PM) to serve on the board for the next two years.  

Nominations will take place at the next Virtual General Membership Meeting scheduled for Saturday, October 17th at 1 PM (a link will be sent out to the membership for that Zoom meeting).  If you are interested in running for one of the four positions or you want to nominate someone, you must be part of the membership meeting on October 17th.   

To be able to vote in the election, set for November 21, you have to be a paid member in good standing 30 days prior to the election (which would be October 22).

Support Latino/a Roundtable – Your Invite to Virtual Cesar Chavez Fundraising Breakfast

I am writing to ask for your support of the Latino and Latina Roundtable of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valley 16th annual Cesar Chavez breakfast fundraiser that will be held virtually Friday, September 25, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.   Because of the coronavirus crisis, our organization was forced to postpone our annual Cesar Chavez breakfast fundraiser last March until September 25.  When we postponed it last March we envisioned that we could have the face-to-face event in September but with the spread of COVID-19 it became clear that this would be impossible.  Now, we will be holding a virtual event that will honor leaders in our region who have exemplified the principles and values of Cesar Chavez including:  Teresa Romero, President of the United Farmworkers Union; Jeanette Ellis-Royston, President of the Pomona Valley Branch of the NAACP; Mario and Cecilia Suarez, posthumous award for their contributions as educators; and John Nolte, community-based lawyer (Community Star award as member of the Latino and Latina Roundtable).  In addition, Social Justice Scholarships will be presented to the following students who exemplify the values of connecting their studies to community engagement and social change:  Emely Andreo, Garey High School (to Cal Poly Pomona); Josue Garcia (Cal Poly Pomona); Presila Lua, Garey H. S. (to CSU San Bernardino); Facisco Villagomez (Univ. of LaVerne); Fernando Cruz Bonilla,  Ganesha H. S. (to UC-Berkeley.

Our organization has historically been a volunteer organization that has relied on this one fundraiser to fund our efforts, which include advocacy, community events, and scholarships for local students.  More recently, our board has moved to develop a strategic plan to ensure the sustainability of our organization on a long-term basis.  As part of that plan, we have established an office, hired a director, and are looking at other means of support to fund our efforts.  It is in this context that I am writing to you to donate to our annual Cesar Chavez Breakfast.

Invitation to rally at Cerda Park and Caravan to Chicano Moratorium Commemoration in East L. A.

Join the Pomona delegation of the 50th Annual Chicano Moratorium. The Chicano Moratorium we will be commemorating took place on August 29, 1970 in East LA.

The Chicano Moratorium was the largest anti-war movement led by Chicanos.

Pomona participated in the event in 1970. 50 years later, we are participating again. Pomona has a long history of Chicano activism against imperialism as well as against police brutality.

We will meet at Tony Cerda Park at 8AM to hear from some of Pomona’s original 1970 participants and then at 9AM we will caravan to Whittier blvd. in Pico Rivera.  

We are demanding the original demands of the first moratoriums as well as adding new demands.

Demands: self-determination, the liberation of women, ending Chicano military drafting into wars like Vietnam, pro-peace, stopping U.S. military intervention, ending racism, ending police killings/crimes, proper access to bilingual and quality public education, good jobs, equality for all, access to health care, benefits for veterans and the elderly, housing, political representation, legalization for all, fair and humane immigration, stopping Trump’s administration/policies, environmental justice, solidarity with all oppressed nations if the world, and ending white supremacy, privatization of public and social services

Urgent request in support of translators and interpreters

Please read below the information that is being shared regarding interpreters and translators in CA.

Freelance interpreters and translators have provided valuable services free of charge to our organization over the years. As of January 2020, California law prevents language service providers from subcontracting them, on account of which they have lost a major portion of their income. California’s AB2257, addresses this problem, and is expected to reach the floor of the California Senate any day now. Our interpreters are requesting calls to the bill’s author to include the following final amendments to AB2257. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the coordinator of our interpreting team, Madeline Rios at 909-263-4579.

Here is the request that our interpreters are asking you to make to Assembly Member Gonzalez at (916) 319-2080:

1) Given that court interpreter and registration exams are currently unavailable due to COVID–19, please include a 2-year moratorium in AB2257 during which interpreters and translators may continue to work as freelancers for those assignments that do not require certifications or registrations.

2) Please clarify the bill so that freelance interpreters and translators may subcontract with one another and not just with referral agencies.

Our communities can no longer wait. We need Pomona Unified School District to vote on Ethnic Studies and on extending the vote to youth and non-citizens within school board elections. Tell them to put these items on their next board meeting agenda. The info to submit a public comment is below and you can click here to access a public comment sample template. Please submit a comment immediately in order for it to be read into the record at the August 19 PUSD Board meeting.
