Announcement to Support Community Lawyer Francisco Suarez

Francisco Suarez, who has always been supportive of community issues including the work around checkpoints, immigrant rights, and our community’s concerns, has moved his offices to  140 W. Foothill Blvd., Suite B-1 in Claremont.  He is sending out this information to let our community friends, who have sought his services in the past, know that he has moved.  As always, we support Francisco in his efforts – as he has always supported our community efforts.

Lessons from an Activist Intellectual by Jose Zapata Calderon, co-founder of the Latino/a Round Table
Forum and Book Signing
Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 7 pm Free

This book provides examples of how an academician can combine the roles of teacher, researcher, and activist with a community-based critical pedagogy for democracy and empowerment.  This book discusses the interconnections made between José Calderón’s pedagogy and his history as an immigrant, student, social movement leader, researcher, professor, and community organizer. At the same time, it provides examples of an interactive, intercultural, and interdisciplinary pedagogy that involves both students and community participants as both teachers and learners in social change projects. This style of pedagogy has a particular salience for historically excluded individuals from diverse racial, class, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds, for whom the educational experience can be both an alienating and empowering experience.

Lopez quickly begins to tell the story of his friend and drinking buddy, Rudy Sanchez, or better known in the barrios of Los Angeles, Detective Sanchez. In the hot summer of 1950, Lopez defends a woman with a problem.  Her son, Chuy Ortiz has been accused of murder. Invitation to film showing: Chicano Park and David Diaz

This is your invitation to the film showing “Chicano Park” with guest Speaker David Diaz, author of the book Barrio Urbanism this Friday October 16th at 6pm. at Bellas Artes Gallery (244 S. Garey Ave, Pomona, 91766).

The Latin@ Roundtable and M.E.Ch.A de Mt. Sac are hosting this community gathering/potluck through Unity in the Community.

The focus is to create dialogue through films where we can learn from each other and educate each other on issues connected to the community.

The film depicts the history of Barrio Logan in San Diego, how the community organized for its survival, how the community took over the land situated beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, and turned it into a place for murals, familia unity, organizing, cultural sustainability, and what is now Chicano Park.

Big Victory: Support Irene Ramirez Returning to Pomona College!

Irene Ramirez returned to work today to her position as a Cook at Pomona College!  We are planning a brief and informal welcome back for Irene this Wednesday, October 14th at 10:00AM outside of Frary Dining Hall at the fountain.  Irene will be able to take her 10-minute break around that time and come out for just a couple of minutes, so if you can join us, please be there promptly at 10:00 so as not to miss her!  Hope to see you there.  Again, please feel free to forward this to any allies who might want to join us on Wednesday.

We have exciting news!  The second of the 17 Pomona workers who were fired in December of 2011 will be returning to work at the College tomorrow!  You may remember when dining hall workers won their first union contract in 2013, they insisted on including language guaranteeing that their fired co-workers be reinstated as soon as they were able to present valid work authorization documents.  Christian Torres returned to work at Pomona in 2013 after obtaining work authorization through President Obama’s first executive order around DACA.  Now Irene Ramirez, a prep cook at Pomona for 14 years prior to her termination, will be returning to her job with her full seniority intact!  The Pomona worker committee is planning a small welcome-back gathering with Irene for later this week and would like to invite you all to join us.  I will forward you details as soon as the committee has chosen the date and time together with Irene.  In the meantime, if you frequent the Frary Dining Hall at Pomona please welcome Irene back to work!  Please feel free to forward this to any allies with whom you would like to share this wonderful news.
