IN MEMORY OF MAGDAELENO “LENO” ROSE-ÁVILA’S LIFE
I met Leno through his poem, “I Am the Bad Hombre” published in the Border Angels Newsletter from San Diego. I was deeply impressed with his connection and understanding of “Los de ‘abajo”. How can he not be, when he was representative of his people? He was speaking for the same people the Tribuno represented.

Our deepest condolences to familia, extended familia, and all those whose lives were influenced and changed by Magdaleno. I was one of those, and although hurting inside, have the consolation that who he was and what he contributed is very much alive in all that we do in the continuing struggles for justice and equity. Que Viva Leno! Magdaleno- Presente!

As far back as when I started as a professor at Pitzer’s College in the 1990’s, I joined alongside Al (and so many others that included familia and supporters such as Angela and Jim Sanbrano) in his efforts to critically recover and preserve the history of the Arbol Verde barrio on the east side of Claremont.
